Last year I harvested and distributed about eight ounces of milkweed seeds. My goal for this year was one pound of seeds and the patch really delivered, yielding 17.45 ounces of seeds!

This is a LARGE mixing bowl so the size is a bit deceiving. Volume-wise these seeds would nearly fill a gallon jug. This isn’t the full total as I have already distributed some seeds via compost bombs and there are still a few pods out there (I’ll let the wind distribute those) but this is the great bulk of the harvest. Couldn’t be happier!
I’ve formed and dried about 1000 compost bombs so far (sifted compost mixed with clay-only cat litter, moistened and formed into about 1-inch sized balls) and now need to glue on seeds (good ol’ Elmers) and start distributing them, targeting power line cuts, vacant lots, edges of waterways, places like that. Hard to tell if any plants I spot in the next few years are a direct result of my activity, but I have to hope I’m making a difference.
And, if you would like to distribute some seeds in your area to make your own contribution to this effort, contact me (info at bitsofnature.biz) with your mailing address and I’ll send some along!
